ARS - Art in Portugal and the "Portuguese World"

To grasp this section´s scientific and methodological scope, it is important to detail its various aims, which are directly related to its three working groups:

1) Painting (1500 - 1800);
2) Theory and History of Architecture;
3) Total Work of Art.

The main aim is to study the art produced in Portugal, including the Portuguese territories in Africa, America and Asia. The group also focuses on works of art produced in an international context, but currently found in our country. The goal is to determine, from a multidisciplinary and relational perspective, the identity of Portuguese art in the world and the close connections established with other European and global art forms. This goal matches one of ARTIS´ main strategic guidelines, namely the affirmation and recognition of Portuguese art as the cultural reflection of a new geopolitical context, largely due to the cultural and artistic exchanges enabled by the Portuguese presence around the world. This research group also aims to understand, create and disseminate an artistic and cultural model that reflects the country’s identity, and can thus be used to ground the research and conception of cultural products. The scientific research that is systematically produced and published can help rethink the value of Art History as a strategic research area, essential for the promotion of Portuguese culture worldwide.
