CONFERENCE | "FROM ROME TO LISBON: LOURENÇO DE SALZEDO AND THE MAIN ALTAR OF THE JERÓNIMOS MONASTERY (1570-1572)"

Vitor Serrão, professor at ARTIS - Art History Institute (FLUL), will deliver on June 27th at 5 pm, in the Cultural Centre of Belém (next to the Jerónimos Monastery), a talk entitled "From Rome to Lisbon: Lourenço de Salzedo and the main altar of the Jerónimos Monastery (1570-1572)". The lecture is part of the Summer Course "Scenes of the History of Lisbon: The Parish of Belém", promoted by the Portuguese Academy of History and the Parish Council of Belém.

The five panels of the main altar of the Jerónimos Monastery are the work "of the great painter Salzedo", as stated by the chronicler Friar Manuel Bautista de Castro. They are the main opus of the unfortunate artist, who was born in Seville c. 1535 and died at a young age in 1578, in Lisbon, where he had been since 1568 at the service of Queen Catherine of Austria. The lecture will reveal two unknown aspects of the life of this excellent but forgotten painter, who received his training in Rome, in the Raphaelesque circles of Giorgio Vasari and Giovanni Siciolante da Sermoneta, and who worked with Gaspar Becerra become coming to Portugal (where he was best man at the wedding of his friend Fernão Gomes). Given the elegance and novelty of his work, Salzedo (or Cauzedo) should be acknowledged as a central figure in the history of 16th-century Iberian art - especially after the remarkable restoration of the main altar of the Jerónimos Monastery, conducted in 1999-2001 by Carmen Olazabal Almada and Luís Tovar Figueira.
