PEETER BALTEN'S "PORTRAITS OF THE MONTHS" [INVITED WORK] THE 'PORTRAITS OF THE MONTHS' from the Cathedral of Miranda do Douro is the title of the exhibition that opens at the MNAA - National Museum of Ancient Art on January 30, at 6 pm, with a presentation by Professor Vítor Serrão, Ph.D.
Promoted by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the North, the Museu da Terra de Miranda and the MNAA, presents as an Invited Work a very rare cycle of allegories painted in Antwerp, around 1580, in Peter Balten's workshop. Acquired in the Netherlands by the 5th Bishop of Miranda D. Jerónimo de Menezes, it is believed, and practically unknown until recent investigations, the twelve small boards constitute in their kind a valuable testimony, common to Protestant and Catholic audiences, of the beneficial symbolism of the Calendars during the European Modern Age.
The exhibition will take place at the European Painting Gallery, on Floor 1 / Room 60, and will be displayed at the Museum, as an Invited Work, until May.
